Special Agents J. Robert Porter and Charles W. Elmore were shot and killed inside the FBI office in El Centro, California, on August 9, 1979.
The two agents were assigned to the El Centro Resident Agency of the FBI’s San Diego Division and were alone in the office when a social worker, identified by the FBI as James Maloney, opened fire on them. Porter and Elmore returned fire and wounded the gunman, but both agents were killed in the attack. The assailant then took his own life.
Their deaths marked part of a tragic day in FBI history. On that same date, Special Agent Johnnie L. Oliver was also shot and killed in a separate incident in Ohio, making August 9, 1979, the first day in FBI history that three special agents were lost to adversarial action.
Special Agent J. Robert Porter was born in March 1935 in Heber, Arizona. He entered on duty as an FBI special agent in 1967, first serving in the San Antonio Field Office before being assigned in 1978 to the El Centro Resident Agency.
Special Agent Charles W. Elmore was born in May 1945 in Seattle, Washington. A graduate of the University of Washington at Seattle, he entered on duty as an FBI special agent in 1972 and was assigned in 1978 to the El Centro Resident Agency of the San Diego Field Office.
Both agents are memorialized on the FBI’s Wall of Honor, and the San Diego Field Office continues to remember their sacrifice. Streets in El Centro have also been named in their honor.

Honor Bound Spirits in San Diego, California, creates this commemorative bottle. The company is marine-owned and a friend to all first responders. The bottle is superior to other engravings. It is sandblasted, not just etched, and pays true honor to every fallen first responder it is created for.
The whiskey is first aged in new 53-gallon, medium-charred American oak barrels for up to 8 years. Then, it is rested in-barrel with Chilean Amburana oak staves. It creates a uniquely sweet, yet spicy bourbon whiskey. It has hints of gingerbread and fresh vanilla on the nose. There is a pronounced sweetness on the palate. It shows touches of oak, spice cake, nutmeg, and light brown sugar.
The bottles can be shipped across the United States except for the restricted states of Alaska, Massachusetts, Michigan, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Utah.
